Internationally acclaimed musician, broadcaster, and actor, Sylvia Mdunyelwa, was laid to rest on Saturday, 2 September 2023. Her passing marked the end of an illustrious career that had a profound influence not only on the South African music industry but also on her community. Sylvia’s melodious journey began to take shape in the vibrant 1970s when she joined Victor Ntoni’s sextet, as reported by The Conversation. It was within this ensemble that her exceptional musical talent began to shine. This gift, honed alongside legendary Cape Town Jazz musicians such as the Ngcukana brothers, Ezra and Duke Ngcukana, Winston Mankunku, Nick Carter, and Merton Barrow, would go on to captivate audiences worldwide.
Born in the heart of Langa, Sylvia was affectionately known as ‘Sis Nce’ or ‘Mam Nce’ within her community. To a broader Cape Town fan base. She took immense pride in her heritage.
Mam Nce possessed a unique ability to interpret jazz melodies and traditional Xhosa songs. What set her apart was her talent for infusing these genres with her own distinctive style. Yet, Sylvia’s ambitions extended beyond personal success; she dedicated herself to nurturing the talents of young, aspiring musicians.
In 1990, Mam Nce took a group of young musicians to the International Children’s Jazz Festival in Canada. This opportunity propelled her to the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). Where she further polished her skills in music and theater, enriching her already illustrious musical journey.
Beyond her performances, Mam Nce also served as a broadcaster. She presented ‘Voice of Jazz,’ a program on P4 Radio and Heart 104.9FM, and actively participated as a board member of Fine Music Radio, a classical jazz station in Cape Town. Her influence extended to Umhlobo Wenene FM, a Xhosa radio station, where she hosted her own show.
Notably, Sylvia Mdunyelwa never had formal singing lessons despite her enormous success. Her talent was a gift from her family and the vibrant musical environment of Langa. Her legacy will live on not only through her music but also through the impact she made on the South African music industry and the lives of many artists.”
