Fans were devastated when The River was cancelled earlier in 2024, but there’s good news for those who miss the show. The River character Cobra Mokoena is getting his own spin-off, titled Cobrizi, which will premiere in March 2025 on Mzansi Magic.

Tshedza Pictures, the production company behind The River, is bringing Cobra’s compelling story to life again in a brand-new series. Creative producer Khobi Ledwaba spoke to Daily Sun about the spin-off, revealing why Cobra, played by Presley Chweneyagae, is so special to fans.

“Cobra has always been a fan-favourite with a compelling mix of charm, grit, and vulnerability,” said Khobi. “His journey from hustler to reluctant hero resonated deeply with audiences. His character has so much untapped potential, and we felt his story deserved a deeper exploration, especially as someone constantly navigating the thin line between survival and redemption.”

Cobrizi will focus on Cobra’s life after the events of The River. “The spin-off explores Cobra’s future while drawing from the complexities of his past,” Khobi explained. “Audiences will see some familiar faces, including some of his family and closest allies from The River, while being introduced to new characters who challenge and shape his evolving world.”

Fans can expect an emotionally charged drama filled with unexpected twists. “The show delves into themes of family, loyalty, and redemption, with Cobra at the heart of it all,” Khobi said. “Audiences will see him face intense personal and external challenges that push him to his limits, while still delivering the charm, wit, and tension that The River fans have come to love.”
