Pics! Retired News Anchor Noxolo Grootboom Receives Honorary Doctorate. Congratulations are in order for retired veteran SABC IsiXhosa news anchor Noxolo Grootboom, who was just awarded an Honorary Doctorate By Rhodes University.
The 61-year-old was conferred her Doctor of Letters (D Litt) (honoris causa) during the university’s graduation ceremony on October 29th. Honorary degrees are academic awards given by universities to individuals to recognize their exceptional contributions to society or lifetime achievement in their field.
Dr. Noxolo Grootboom was awarded for her significant promotion of national pride and culture through her career which spanned a total of 37 years at the SABC. Grootboom retired on March 30th and read her last 19:00PM IsiXhosa bulletin to end of an amazing career.
In response to the honour, Mam Noxolo thanked the university for the award sharing how her challenges proved to be life lessons in the long run which taught her how to always have hope.
“I am so speechless; I am out of words to thank Rhodes University for the honour bestowed on me. Each event of my life is a life lesson that cannot be merely explained. Even though I had minimal opportunities to further my studies, it seemed as if my dreams about my future were perishing“
“Today, Rhodes University teaches me that hope is always ignited when it seems as though your dreams are perishing. And when that hope is ignited, it leads you to a new dream. Today, I feel like I am a living example to the youth. This is because, when you devote yourself to your work, new opportunities open up. I am very thankful to Rhodes University for this opportunity” she said.
947 radio host Anele Mdoda who is an absolute fan of Dr Grootboom was there in support of the icon and has shared how proud she is by the milestone. Other familiar faces who were present to celebrate Dr Grootboom also include Zizo Tshwete, Hulisani Ravele, Melenie Bala and more.
