This evening @dove Global Vice-President Sophie Galvani shared that: ‘Low self-esteem results in more than 50% of women opting out of life and living.’ That means women not showing up for life, for special occasions, not wanting to go anywhere or do anything with anyone. That shook me. I took this pic earlier today and when I think about where I was mentally a year ago this time, I am reminded of what I believe about building self-esteem. THIS is how I rocked #ComicCon2018! ?? The statement is simple: The time for us creatives in South Africa to create superheroes and comic & animated characters that look and sound like us is NOW! If there’s one thing the creation and execution of #StevenUniverse has taught me it is that representation and diversity in our content matters, especially for children. After the @dove Self-Esteem Programme x @stevenuniverse panel, I met this young lady, Rotem, from Israel. She caught my attention in the theatre because once the panel was done and everyone was being led outside, she was going in the opposite direction to get a letter she had written to Steven Universe Creator and EP @rebeccasugar. Rebecca was on her way off the stage but she spotted Rotem and reached out to receive the letter. Speaking to Rotem afterwards in the bathroom and finding out how far she had traveled just for this moment, to be in the same room as Rebecca Sugar, gave me goosebumps. Not just because she’d met the Creator of her favourite show but because she just wanted to give personal thanks to Rebecca for creating a show that taught her, and continues to teach her, to accept and celebrate her individuality. That whole 10-15min experience, from the theatre to the bathroom encounter, was so pure and so beautifully honest. As is Steven Universe and the heart that lies in its Creator @rebeccasugar. ?? When purpose meets passion and power and intention, the impact will be deep and far-reaching. That’s #StevenUniverse. ? #ConfidentGirl #DoveComicCon #StevenUniverse
