Pearl Thusi Speaks On Growing Up Defending Her Blackness! The TV host has been interviewing local celebs in the hit MTV Base show, Behind The Story.

In one of the episodes, Pearl told hr own story and how she became to be the Pearl Thusi aka ‘The Real Black Pearl’ aka Mama Pantha.

On why she has always called herself the real black Pearl, the beauty said it’s because she is real, her name is Pearl and she is black. Pearl shared how she grew up always explaining herself that she was black.

“I have always had to kind of defend my honor of being a black person because I didn’t look it for some people. It was a reminder from a very young age that I always have to tell people, ‘I’m black’.” Pearl said.

Pearl shared that people would tell her she was cute like a coloured person when being dark was not considered cool. “I’d be like ‘I don’t care’, I’m black,” she added.
