Colourism is a real thing, and award winning actress Pearl Thusi could probably tell us a thing or two about how the effects of being an outcast due to the colour of her skin, lead to her harming herself and wishing she had a darker skin tone.
In Pearl’s recent interview with Mac G on his popular ‘Podcast And Chill With Mac G’ the Queens Sono actress opened up ‘light skinned privilege’s’, and also shared how she was bullied as a kid for looking different and being the only light skinned person in her group of friends. According to Thusi, the bullying got so bad that she would burn herself to try and fit in.
“ I used to like burn my skin when I was a kid to stop the teasing,” Thusi said.
This stemmed from Pearl’s constant debate on social media of whether her career was successful because of her light skin. Pearl went on to address the hate on social media surrounding colourism after a fellow actress claimed that Pearl was only booked for acting roles because of her skin colour.
Pearl cleared the air in saying that colourism is an existing thing, however being told she was only successful because of her skin colour is uncalled for..
“They want someone to be upset with, people need someone to be a villain in their story and when you’ve been the chosen one to be the villain, sometimes you’ve just got to accept that and keep walking” Pearl said.
