The anticipation is building as the countdown begins for one of South Africa’s most prestigious music events—the South African Afro Music Awards. According to TshisaLIVE, last week, the organizers revealed the eagerly awaited list of nominees, setting the stage for a thrilling showdown on October 26th. The awards ceremony, now in its fifth edition, will be hosted at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg, Ekurhuleni, promising a night to remember.
The excitement was palpable as the awards were officially launched last Sunday through a virtual event aimed at reaching a wider audience. China Mpololo, the event organizer, shared his enthusiasm with TshisaLIVE: “It’s all going down to the wire. Every week, we engage with our stakeholders to host one of the biggest awards in the country, celebrating our own talent.”
This year’s awards are particularly significant as they coincide with the celebration of 30 years of democracy in South Africa. Mpololo emphasized that the event will not only honour the artists who have shaped Afro music over the decades but also reflect on the rich legacy they’ve created. “It’s evident we will look back at where Afro music comes from while we celebrate the legacy created by the artists, legends, and icons of the music value chain. The production and creative work will 100% reflect that,” he stated.
The nominees across various categories represent a blend of seasoned icons and rising stars, highlighting the diversity and evolution of Afro music. In the category of Best Female Afro Artist of Democracy, powerhouses like Thandiswa Mazwai, Zonke Dikana, Lira, Simphiwe Dana, and Judith Sephuma are set to compete for the top honor.
For the Best Male Afro Artist of Democracy, the nominees include the soulful Vusi Nova, the ever-passionate Nathi, the versatile Press, the smooth sounds of Afrotraction, and the dynamic Ntando.
The Best Afro Group/Duo of Democracy category is a battle of legends, featuring Jaziel Brothers, Bongo Maffin, Mafikizolo, The Soil, and Malaika. These groups have not only defined the genre but have also become household names over the years.
The awards also recognize future legends, with the Best Female Afro Current and Future Legend category shining a spotlight on artists like Amanda Black, Naima Kay, Berita, Ami Faku, and Nomfundo Moh, who are all paving the way for the next generation of Afro music. For the Best Female Afro Soul Artist of Democracy, the nominees include soulful powerhouses Zonke, Zahara, Siphokazi, Judith Sephuma, and Moneoa, all of whom have made significant contributions to the genre.
As the date approaches, the excitement continues to build. Who will take home the coveted awards? One thing is certain: the South African Afro Music Awards will be a night of celebration, reflection, and unforgettable performances, honoring the rich tapestry of Afro music and the artists who have shaped it.
