The highly anticipated 7th Joburg Film Festival officially kicked off in Sandton on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, marking the beginning of an exciting week of African and international cinema. The festival, which runs until March 16, is set to screen over 60 feature films and documentaries alongside 43 short films, celebrating diverse storytelling from across the globe.
One of the festival’s highlights is the premiere of seven films from first-time directors, a testament to the festival’s commitment to fostering new voices in the film industry. These films, selected from 296 submissions over two years, will have their world premieres before becoming available for streaming on Showmax in April.
Tracy Ann van Rooyen, Showmax’s new executive head of content, expressed excitement about the streaming platform’s role in amplifying fresh perspectives in filmmaking.
“Showmax is committed to opening up the industry. Incredible work is continually underway to support new talent and foster fresh perspectives in storytelling,” she said. “We have helped filmmakers like Mandla N and Kelsey Egan produce their first movies, which both went on to win SAFTAs and achieve incredible success. So we’re delighted to showcase a new wave of filmmakers at this year’s Joburg Film Festival.”
With screenings held at prestigious venues such as Nu-Metro Hyde Park, Theatre on the Square, The Bioscope, Artistry at BlackBrick Hotel, and The Forge, festivalgoers can expect a top-tier cinematic experience.
The festival’s opening night was nothing short of spectacular, with Nomalanga Shozi taking center stage as the night’s host. The beloved actress and presenter expressed her gratitude for being part of such a prestigious event.
“We’re so back! Last night was just perfect, doing what I absolutely love; hosting on the Red Carpet and on stage at the Joburg Film Festival Opening Night,” Shozi shared. “As an actor and presenter, this was always on my list, and we finally get to say we DID IT! Thank you to the team @2ndroundsa, @joburg_film_festival and @multichoice_group for having me! To the village that makes me look razor-sharp, time and time again: THANK YOU.”
With tickets priced between R80 and R100, the Joburg Film Festival offers an incredible opportunity for film lovers to immerse themselves in compelling stories from Africa and beyond. As the festival continues, audiences can look forward to a diverse lineup of films, engaging discussions, and unforgettable cinematic moments.
For those unable to attend in person, the excitement extends beyond the festival, as some of the featured films will soon be available to stream on Showmax.
