“Amandla isn’t just a character I play, she’s a reflection of so many African women I’ve known. Strong, complex, and carrying the weight of both history and hope. This role demanded every part of me, my craft, my courage, and my heart. I’m proud to stand in her shoes and tell a story that feels deeply ours. And it will resonate anywhere in the world,” Shozi told Sunday World.

In Black Gold, Amandla Zungu is a principled “daughter of the soil” whose life is turned upside down when her father is brutally murdered. Wrongly accused of his death and betrayed by her own stepmother Florence, she is cast out of her home and forced into exile.

The story unfolds in the sugarcane belt of KwaZulu-Natal, the bustling Empangeni township, and the industrial heart of Richards Bay. For Shozi, a proud KZN native, the landscape is not just a backdrop — it’s a living, breathing part of the story.

Florence, played by the legendary Dawn Thandeka King, is revealed as the mastermind behind Amandla’s downfall. Secretly working with her lover, Tom Motsepe (portrayed by Sello Maake KaNcube), Florence’s betrayal pushes Amandla into the dangerous world of illegal mining. It is there that she rises through the ranks, driven by a burning desire to reclaim her family’s legacy and confront those who destroyed her life.

The drama mixes themes of family, justice, legacy, and forbidden romance. Dialogue moves seamlessly between English and isiZulu, adding cultural depth and authenticity. The cinematography captures sweeping rural beauty alongside tense, intimate moments, bringing to life both the majesty of the setting and the raw emotion of the story.

Produced by BET Africa and Black Brain Productions, Black Gold is a female-led saga with Amandla Zungu leading the fight for truth and dignity in a world scarred by greed and betrayal.

Black Gold premieres August 18, 2025, on BET Africa (DStv Channel 129) and will air Monday to Thursday at 6:30pm.
