In a heartfelt gesture amid a cloud of controversy, Bishop Mpendulo Nkambule, the husband of the late Ukhozi FM broadcaster Zanele Mbokazi-Nkambule, reached out to renowned musician Mzwakhe Mbuli following a surprising claim made by Mbuli. According to ZiMoja, the acclaimed “People’s Poet” boldly asserted that he was the co-founder of the Crown Gospel Music Awards—the very awards that have long been credited to Mbokazi, who tragically passed away recently.
The claim, made by Mbuli on the day of Mbokazi’s passing, left many shocked. As tensions grew, speculation arose about whether Mbuli would be unwelcome at Mbokazi’s funeral. However, to the surprise of many, the poet attended the service, undeterred by the swirling controversy. Known for his influence in the music industry and his own Siyabakhumbula Awards, Mbuli even extended a message of condolence to the Nkambule family, seemingly rising above the potential discord.
In a message seen by ZiMoja, Bishop Nkambule took a conciliatory tone towards Mbuli, defusing what could have become a more heated situation. “I know that Zanele loved you and spoke very highly of you. She has never had an issue with you. She respected and honoured you as a brother. I also have the utmost respect for you. Thank you, my brother. It is well,” wrote Nkambule, showing remarkable grace during this difficult time.
Mbuli’s claims about co-founding the Crown Gospel Music Awards stirred the showbiz industry, particularly as he brought in high-profile names like EFF leader Julius Malema and Advocate Dali Mpofu, who was working at the SABC when the awards were established. Despite the controversy, Mbuli made it clear that his intention was not to incite conflict with the Nkambule family but to ensure the truth was known.
In response to the ongoing discussions, Mbuli chose not to delve further into the matter, instead offering a simple but poignant message: “May God provide strength to him and the entire family who are mourning during this period of loss.”
