In an interview with OK Mzansi Magazine, Nkonzo speaks more about his debut single.

1. Your debut single “Akvumi” carries such emotional weight. What inspired the story behind it?

Ubizo represents my spiritual calling. I’ve realized everyone has a purpose, and mine is to help people through music. I’m embracing this calling to change lives and heal others.

2. You explore human vulnerability and emotional honesty in Akvumi. Why was it important for you to share that truth through music?

“Akvumi” is a personal prayer. I wrote it during a tough time, speaking to God about my struggles and hoping for a better future. It’s about staying strong and finding light in darkness.

3. The song blends traditional Maskandi influences with contemporary Afrosoul. How do you balance your African heritage with modern sounds?

Sharing truth through music is healing. I want people to relate, heal, and connect with their emotions through my story. If I can inspire hope, that’s what matters. Balancing heritage and modern sounds is a collaboration. Working with Dr. Sipho Sithole, we blended traditional Maskandi with contemporary Afrosoul, creating something unique and powerful.

4. Can you share a personal experience that influenced the emotional tone of Akvumi?

My personal experience inspired Akvumi. I shared my story to show that no situation is permanent, and there’s always hope for a better tomorrow.

5. Your voice has been described as deeply spiritual. How do you prepare yourself mentally and emotionally before recording?

I prepare through prayer and meditation. I connect with my spiritual self, ensuring I’m grounded and ready to share my music with the world.

6. How has your Bhaca heritage shaped your storytelling and musical identity?

My Bhaca heritage shapes my music. Growing up with traditional music influences my storytelling and sound, blending old with new.

7. You worked with an incredible lineup of musicians and vocalists. How did those collaborations elevate Ubizo?

Collaborations elevated Ubizo. Working with incredible musicians and vocalists brought new energy and depth to the project, making it richer and more impactful.

8. Would you describe your creative process as spiritual?

My creative process is spiritual. I lay the foundation of prayer, and the music flows from there, guiding listeners into a spiritual space.

9. What was your vision for the sound and message of this EP?

My vision is to inspire purpose. I want people to find their calling and pursue it, using music as a catalyst for change and growth.

10. How did working with instrumentalists like Gabriel Stuurman and Sthembiso Twala influence the sound?

Working with legends influenced the sound. Gabriel Stuurman and Sthembiso Twala brought expertise and excellence, elevating the project’s quality.

11. As an artist in the Afrosoul and Ethno-world space, how do you see the genre evolving locally and globally?

The genre is evolving, and I’m excited. I hope to see more focus on Afrosoul and Ethno-world music, showcasing African sounds globally.

12. How do you stay authentic to your roots while appealing to a modern audience?

Staying authentic is key. Knowing myself, my roots, and my direction helps me balance tradition with modernity.

13. You’ve said your music invites listeners into a trance. What emotional experience do you want fans to have when listening to Ubizo?

I want listeners to connect emotionally. I aim to evoke emotions, spark reflection, and remind people of their strength and resilience.

14. What’s next for Nkonzo ZA — any visuals, performances, or collaborations coming soon?

We’re preparing for visuals and performances. Stay tuned for bookings, media, and collaborations – it’s going to be an exciting journey!
