Natasha Joubert, crowned as Miss SA 2023 on the auspicious evening of Sunday, August 13, has courageously opened up about her arduous battle with depression. This revelation stems from an interview with ENCA, where she candidly recounted her personal journey after not securing a spot in the Top 21 during the Miss Universe 2020 competition.

Natasha Joubert opens up about depression

The captivating spectacle of the Miss SA 2023 pageant unfolded within the grandeur of the SunBet Arena in Pretoria. Among the entrancing contestants, Natasha Joubert emerged triumphant as the coveted Miss SA. Number two in the competition was Bryoni Govender, representing Gauteng. Nade Mabala clinched the title of the second runner-up, forming an assembly of remarkable individuals.

In the wake of her participation in the Miss Universe 2020, where Natasha unfortunately did not secure a position among the Top 21 contenders. Stricken with the feeling that she had not upheld the honor of South Africa to its fullest extent on the global stage, she found herself ensnared in the clutches of depression. The weight of the experience was so overwhelming that it seemed to have left her with PTSD

The gravity of her emotional state became evident in her daily life, as even the simplest tasks grew insurmountable. Recollections of Miss Universe seemed to unleash a torrent of tears, a testament to the profound impact that the event had on her overall well-being. It was during these challenging times that a lifeline was extended to her in the form of a psychologist. Urged by a caring friend, she took those initial steps toward healing. She started attending therapy sessions that became a safe space for her to confront her emotions.

Yet, this struggle was not her only trial. Natasha also disclosed the poignant tale of her father’s passing. This was a profound loss that she had not fully come to terms with by the time 2020 came around. As months transformed into a new year, the lingering pain evolved into a palpable depression.

Natasha Joubert’s journey through these adversities unveils a narrative of resilience and vulnerability. Her ascent to the Miss SA 2023 title stands as a testament to her strength. In sharing her struggle with depression, she has raised awareness about mental health. Additionally, she has underscored the significance of seeking help and finding solace in the company of professionals.
