18-year-old singer Naledi Aphiwe has issued a public apology following a disruptive incident at the Mthandeni’s Summer Experience event in eMdletsheni, KwaZulu-Natal. A viral video captured the moment Aphiwe was booed off stage and pelted with bottles and cans by a hostile crowd. The altercation occurred during a performance featuring Sama-winning Maskandi artist Khuzani “Gatsheni” Ndlovu.
The controversy began when Naledi’s DJ struggled to play her backtrack during Ndlovu’s set. In an unexpected move, Naledi jumped onto the stage to perform her popular song Ubaba Ulala Nami while Ndlovu and his dancers were still performing. The crowd immediately voiced their disapproval, and the situation quickly escalated, forcing Ndlovu and his dancers to leave the stage.
Despite the backlash, Naledi continued to perform until event staff escorted her off for safety.
In response to the incident, Naledi released a statement apologising for her actions:
“Firstly, I would like to express my sincerest gratitude to Mthandeni and his incredible team for providing me with the platform to perform and connect with his supporters. I understand the importance of the opportunity and I truly appreciate the support that has been extended to me,” she began.
She then apologised to Khuzani Ndlovu and his team, acknowledging that her actions were inconsiderate. “It was never my intention to cause any disruption or disrespect, especially to such a respected and established artist in the Maskandi community. I deeply regret the way I conducted myself on stage,” Naledi stated.
The young artist reflected on the importance of growth and maturity, stating that she would take this experience to improve as both an artist and a person. “I understand that the path to success is not just about talent, but also about maturity, respect, and collaboration.”
She ended her statement by asking for the continued support of her fans. “Kuba Landeli Bami, I ask for your understanding and support as I continue on this journey. I know I have room to improve, and I promise to use this experience as a stepping stone to becoming a better artist and person,” she concluded.
