In a surprising turn of events, Mzansi Magic has announced that its telenovela, Champions, will not be returning for a second season. Reported by Sunday World, the show, which premiered on February 5, 2024, and currently airs weekdays at 7 PM, is set to broadcast its final episode on January 31, 2025. Production for the debut season wrapped up last month.
Champions has captivated audiences with its compelling storyline and star-studded cast, featuring seasoned actors like Jo-anne Reyneke, Sello Maake ka-Ncube, Tumisho Masha, Kwenzo Ngcobo, and Kgomotso Christopher. The show dives deep into the world of South African football, exploring themes of ambition, rivalry, and resilience.
Speaking to Sunday World, Shirley Adonisi, the director of local entertainment channels at Mzansi Magic, expressed her gratitude towards everyone involved with the show. “Firstly, to our cast, Tshedza Pictures, sponsors, and advertisers, thank you for your ongoing support for Champions. And for your efforts in entertaining our Mzansi Magic viewers,” she said.
Adonisi also emphasised Mzansi Magic’s commitment to keeping up with television trends and hinted at exciting new developments on the horizon. “We are currently in the development of several new show concepts not limited to telenovelas. And we are fine-tuning our key returning shows to ensure that Mzansi Magic’s prime-time 2025 slots are well received,” she added.
Among the standout performances in Champions is Kwenzo Ngcobo, known for his role in The Wife, who plays Zipho, a powerhouse in talent management. Sello Maake ka-Ncube, a veteran actor from Generations and Skeem Saam, portrays Washington Modise, a former football player turned entrepreneur. Tumisho Masha takes on the role of Philemon Modise, Washington’s overshadowed brother, whose storyline is steeped in sibling rivalry and a quest for recognition.
Jo-anne Reyneke shines as Sne Modise, a resilient and ambitious character navigating the male-dominated soccer empire. Sne’s journey is marked by love, betrayal, and a relentless determination to defy gender norms and lead the Soshanguve Giants FC to success.
While fans will undoubtedly miss Champions, the anticipation for what Mzansi Magic has in store next is already building. As the curtain falls on this beloved telenovela, viewers can look forward to new and exciting content in the coming year.
