After 520 episodes and two seasons, Mzansi Magic is set to close the chapter on its hit telenovela Gqeberha: The Empire. Produced by Tshedza Pictures, the show quickly became a favourite among fans when it debuted in January 2021, but it is now being canceled, reportedly due to low viewership. According to TshisaLIVE, while the show garnered an audience of 620,154 viewers, it couldn’t compete with Umkhokha: The Curse, which drew in 1 million viewers.
Shirley Adonisi, director of local entertainment channels at M-Net, expressed immense gratitude to the talented team behind Gqeberha: The Empire. “We extend our heartfelt thanks to the producers, cast, and crew. Their unwavering dedication and exceptional talent have delivered spellbinding storylines in one of the most fiercely competitive prime-time slots,” said Adonisi. She also acknowledged the support of the Eastern Cape provincial government, which played a significant role in the show’s production.
As the show heads toward its grand finale, fans can expect a riveting conclusion. Hlumelo is left to grapple with the consequences of his poor decisions, seeking redemption from those he wronged, while Nozuko faces the heartbreaking weight of her loss.
Despite its exit, Gqeberha: The Empire leaves behind a legacy of captivating drama, strong performances, and unforgettable storylines that kept viewers glued to their screens.
