After nearly three decades on South African television, Muvhango is coming to an emotional end. In a media statement, SABC2 and Word of Mouth Productions confirmed that the long-running telenovela will air its final episode on 8 August 2025 at 21:00.
“After 28 years on air, SABC2 and Word of Mouth Productions announce the conclusion of the long-running soapie Muvhango,” read the official statement.
Created by the legendary Duma Ndlovu, Muvhango first aired on 7 April 1997. From the beginning, it stood out by proudly using Tshivenda, a language that was rarely seen on television at the time. Through its storytelling, it highlighted Venda culture and the balance between tradition and modern life.
“Muvhango gave an opportunity to an ignored language that has become one of the most celebrated languages in South Africa now,” said Duma Ndlovu. “It has been a privilege and an honour to create moments on television where the marginalised languages were at the centre of them all.”
The show introduced unforgettable characters like Chief Azwindini, Thandaza, KK, Doobsie, Mulalo, James, Vho-Masindi, and many others who became part of our daily lives.
It also delivered some of the most iconic storylines in local TV history:
· Mashudu Mukwevho dying in the arms of his Sowetan wife Catherine
· The emotional war over Mashudu’s body between his wives Catherine and Vho-Masindi
· The famous love triangle of Thandaza, Edward, and Doobsie
· Azwindini’s polygamous marriages to Susan, Pfuluwani, Vele, and Mpho
· The rivalry between Azwindini and Mulalo for the royal throne
· KK’s flashy outfits and over-the-top personality
· Thandaza and Ranthumeng’s unforgettable wedding
· Teboho’s shocking shoot-to-kill moment
Speaking on behalf of SABC2, Acting Group Executive for Video Entertainment Lala Tuku said, “For almost 30 years, Muvhango has been a pillar of SABC2’s programming and a beloved part of South African television history. More than just a drama, Muvhango has been the champion of language, culture, identity and national pride; inspiring, entertaining, educating and uniting audiences across South Africa.”
As the curtain closes, SABC2 thanked the dedicated cast and crew for their hard work and passion. Most importantly, they extended heartfelt gratitude to the millions of loyal fans who have supported the show from Monday to Friday for 28 years.
