Mihlali Ndamase, one of South Africa’s most prominent YouTubers and influencers, has found herself at the center of controversy once again. According to IOL, during a recent Instagram Live session, Ndamase allegedly referred to her ex-boyfriend, Leeroy Sidambe, as “After 9,” a term widely considered a homophobic slur.
The live session, which aired on Sunday night, followed after a highly publicized and tumultuous breakup between the two, including Ndamase’s previous allegations that Sidambe physically assaulted her. She had shared images of her bruised face on social media, but Sidambe denied the accusations, claiming Ndamase was under the influence of an unspecified substance at the time.
In her live stream, Ndamase addressed these claims, saying, “Mr After 9, which substance am I on?” The pointed remark insinuated that Sidambe may be hiding his true sexual orientation, further escalating tensions between them.
Their troubled relationship, once marked by public displays of affection, has now devolved into a bitter feud, with both sides exchanging accusations. Social media, particularly X (formerly Twitter), exploded with reactions, with some users speculating about Sidambe’s sexuality.
“She is only seeing all this After 9 nonsense she is talking about now because y’all don’t believe her shenanigans?” tweeted one user, @CFC_AFRIKA_. Another, @ShwiiinoMtekhala, commented, “She’s bitter, but NOT LYING. I already knew this… his friends, LaSizwe, Somizi, Vusi Nova.”
Some users were critical, accusing her of trying to shift the narrative. @Digitalpen101 tweeted, “Mihlali is lying, and even if she is telling the truth, it goes both ways. You may be taking substances, and he may be whatever you are saying, but you are homophobic or coming across that way.”
