The 2025 Hollywoodbets Durban July was more than just a horse-racing event—it was a breathtaking showcase of South Africa’s rich culture, creative brilliance, and fearless fashion. With this year’s theme titled Marvels of Mzansi, celebrities pulled out all the stops to honour their heritage and express their unique style. Among the most talked-about looks of the night was beauty mogul and content creator Mihlali Ndamase, who teamed up with designer Masango by Siphosihle to create a statement outfit that perfectly interpreted the theme.
Mihlali turned heads in a bold black and gold ensemble that fused Afro-futurism with regal African design. She wore a structured metallic gold skirt, sculpted like armor to represent power and pride. Her black corset, beautifully adorned with gold studs and intricate beadwork, added a layer of luxury and strength. The skirt’s engraved panels and bold geometric shapes paid homage to traditional South African patterns. Her slicked-back hair with finger-wave detailing, paired with a gold choker, completed the futuristic warrior-queen look.
Speaking to IOL, Mihlali shared how deeply the theme resonated with her and how intentional her look was: “The moment I heard the theme for the Durban July I knew that Sihle had to be designing my dress, as you know the theme is Marvels of Mzansi. So this is how we interpreted the theme.”
When asked about the meaning behind the rich gold plating on her dress, Mihlali explained: “Celebrating the many resources we have in the country, one of our minerals being gold is very big in the country so it had to be part of my dress as well as honouring the Ndebele tribe… we took those two elements of South Africa and put it all in one dress.”
She revealed that her outfit took more than a month to complete: “This process started a while ago hey, if I’m not mistaken just over a month. I wanted to be well prepared. I’ve been attending the Durban July for a couple of years now, I’ve actually ever been like three times. I didn’t go last year and the year before either I wanted my come back to the Durban July one that is going to be very memorable.”
Joining Mihlali in fashion excellence was Sithelo Shozi, who looked divine in a blue feathered gown symbolising the Indwe, a blue crane which is a bird that represents bravery in Xhosa culture. The gown’s structured shoulders and soft feather detailing created a beautiful mix of power and grace. Her look was not only elegant, but also deeply rooted in cultural meaning.
Khutso Theledi, award-winning sports broadcaster, brought creativity to the carpet by honouring South African soccer teams Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates. Her look was a sporty twist on couture.
DJ Lamiez Holworthy paid powerful tribute to women who helped shape the nation. Her white silk mermaid gown was detailed with diamonds and portraits of iconic women like Winnie Mandela, Brenda Fassie, and Albertina Sisulu.
“Each diamond was a tear that turned to power,” she said. “These were not just women, but thunder in human form.”
Lastly, Cyan Boujee delivered pure goddess energy in a show-stopping red couture gown. Her look featured a structured satin corset, beaded long sleeves, and a flared mermaid skirt. With her voluminous afro and glowing makeup, Cyan embodied strength and sacrifice, writing: “A goddess warrior, a mutant whose power is linked to blood. Fighting against global injustice. I represent STRENGTH & SACRIFICE.”
