South Africa continues to mourn the heartbreaking loss of one of its most talented and beloved actors, Presley Chweneyagae, who passed away at the age of 40.
His family, through his management agency MLA, confirmed the sad news in a statement that touched the hearts of many fans across the country.
“It is with profound sadness that we confirm the untimely passing of one of South Africa’s most gifted and beloved actors, Presley Chweneyagae, at the age of 40,” the statement read.
The family revealed that Presley had been experiencing breathing problems before he died. Paramedics were called to his home and tried to help him, but sadly, he could not be saved.
To honour his life and legacy, two memorial services have been planned where family, friends, and fans can pay their respects and celebrate the life of the award-winning star:
· Mmabatho Convention Centre – 03 June 2025 from 11:00 to 14:00
· South African State Theatre – 05 June 2025 from 11:00 to 14:00
Presley was best known for his role as Cobra in the popular 1Magic drama series The River. His character quickly became a fan favourite, and his performance was widely praised for its depth and realness. Most recently, he took the lead in Cobrizzi, a Mzansi Magic spin-off series inspired by his character.
His breakthrough came in 2005 when he starred in the lead role of the Oscar-winning film Tsotsi. The movie won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film at the 78th Oscars, placing both Presley and South African cinema on the world stage.
His death is a huge loss to the entertainment industry and the country as a whole. His legacy will live on through his powerful performances and the lives he touched through his art.
