Former Miss South Africa finalist Melissa Nayimuli is proudly representing the country as one of 120 contestants from around the globe competing in the prestigious Miss Universe pageant in Thailand. The beauty queen has officially made her debut on the international stage, showing off her national costume and her breathtaking preliminary evening gown as she continues to shine among the world’s best.
Melissa stepped onto the Miss Universe stage on Wednesday, 19 November 2025, for the highly anticipated preliminary competition. She walked with confidence as she showcased her national costume, swimwear and her elegant evening gown. Her stage presence, poise and energy made her stand out, proving why she deserves her place in this global competition.
South Africa’s Miss Universe license holder, African Beauty International, shared that Melissa’s evening gown was designed by couture designer Stephen Van Eeden. They revealed that the gown carries a deeper meaning that highlights Melissa’s heart for unity and her advocacy work.
They explained, “Melissa Nayimuli – Miss Universe Preliminary Evening Gown. Inspired by Melissa’s advocacy for unity, inclusivity, and healing xenophobia across Africa, the gown reflects her mission to build understanding through africanity, film, and her passion for storytelling.
Crafted in luminous chartreuse, the gown features geometric bugle-bead embroidery, teardrop diamante rhinestones, and delicately placed diamante-chain fringing – each element symbolising fragments coming together in harmony. A refined scooped neckline, off-the-shoulder detail, and detachable cape complete the silhouette, embodying both softness and strength.
Hand-finished over 140 hours, this piece reflects our ethos: On the Miss Universe stage, Melissa doesn’t just wear a gown. She wears a story – one of unity, purpose, and proud South African brilliance.”
Melissa also shared a heartfelt and emotional message after stepping off the stage. She posted a video of herself walking proudly and wrote, “I challenge you to pinch me a couple of times to remind me that: Ndim’lo!! All the hours of training, back aches, numb toes have been so worth it!
Just conquered the @missuniverse preliminary stage and I’m feeling so grateful for the love, support having my team here, my love in audience, and everyone back at home who’s cheered me on, messaged and called! My chosi chosi tribe! Ndiyabulela. We crushed it, joe!”
Her excitement and gratitude show just how much work and dedication she has poured into this journey. From long hours of training to emotional support from her loved ones and fans, Melissa made it clear that this achievement is deeply personal and meaningful.
Bokang Montjane-Tshabalala, the National Director for Miss Universe South Africa, also celebrated Melissa’s performance and posted,
“@melissanayimuli watching you at the preliminary was a dream last night!!! Your performance was amazing and I am so proud of you. I have seen how hard you have worked and I SEE YOU !!!”
