Mbalenhle Mavimbela Reveals Whether Acting In South Africa Pays Well. The actress popular for playing Hlomu in the popular Showmax series ‘The Wife’ sat down on YFm’s ‘The Lunch League’. She touched on a few topics related to her how she plans on moving overseas for acting gigs, her first time acting and also the pay disparities in acting.
Sitting down with YFm’s DJ Caddy and Lulo Adiba, the young actress got candid about some the things that she loves about acting. Mbalenhle said that she loves not being herself as the portrayal of the Hlomu character granted her the opportunity to live through someone else, as she and Hlomu didn’t have a lot of similarities. Additionally, she sought therapy because she kind of got stuck in the Hlomu role as time never allowed her to be herself because of dedicating time to her job.
Asked by Lulo Adiba whether the money is good in South Africa’s acting industry, Mavimbela said: “I don’t know what I could compare it to. It’s like…no our money is good. Like compared to travel and tourism, only because when it comes, it comes. So when it isn’t coming that’s when you’re like ‘travel and tourism’.They are solid. They are like stable, with us it’s like…when it’s there it comes. And also it comes with the side hustle. Like the campaigns, because now there’s like influencing on social media. So then the money comes.”
Asked by DJ Caddy whether anyone had ever told her she would get an acting gig on certain conditions, Mbalenhle said that all of her acting gigs she has scored in the past weren’t obtained in any unscrupulous manner. Her first acting gig was obtained by following proper ethical protocol by going for auditions. Further expressing that the rest of her other acting gigs were obtained through the help of her agency.
