Amapiano sensation MaWhoo is riding high on a wave of success after hitting a major milestone in her music career. The talented singer-songwriter recently surpassed one million listeners in a single month on Spotify, cementing her place as one of South Africa’s most celebrated artists.
MaWhoo, whose real name is Thandeka Ngema, is now among the top five most-listened-to female artists in Mzansi, a remarkable achievement that reflects her hard work and dedication. The 30-year-old singer, known for her hit song “Ngilimele,” expressed her excitement and pride in reaching this career-defining moment.
In an interview with Daily Sun, MaWhoo shared her gratitude and joy. “I’m very excited and so grateful. As an individual artist, it’s not easy to make it in this industry, but I’m proud of how far I’ve come,” she said.
Looking back on her journey, MaWhoo recalled the early days when hitting thousands of listeners felt like a huge accomplishment. “When I started, I used to be happy with 5,000, 50,000, or 200,000 listeners. Now, hitting one million is truly a dream come true. It’s proof that things are going well and I’m on the right path in this industry,” she said.
The recognition, especially being in the top five female artists in South Africa, has inspired her to keep pushing forward. “When someone’s work is acknowledged, it’s a sign to keep pushing harder. Being in the top five most listened-to female artists means people love and appreciate what I do. That encouragement gives me energy to keep going and do even more,” MaWhoo added.
As the festive season approaches, the rising star’s schedule is packed with performances, leaving little room for rest. “I’m fully booked for the festive season and won’t be able to go home until January. This is the busiest time for artists, and we only get to rest and see our families in the new year,” she said.
