The life and legacy of the late kwaito legend Mandoza, real name Mduduzi Tshabalala, will be celebrated in an upcoming musical titled The Road to Nkalakatha. Known for his iconic hits like “Nkalakatha,” “Tornado,” and “Sgelekeqe,” Mandoza left an indelible mark on South African music before his untimely death in 2016. He tragically passed away after battling pharyngeal cancer, which had taken his eyesight before the end.
According to TshisaLIVE, the musical, set to debut at the Soweto Theatre on September 18, will narrate Mandoza’s life journey, featuring scenes from his life and performances of his most beloved songs. Speaking to TshisaLIVE on behalf of Mandoza’s wife, Busi Kunene, Mpho Tshabalala—who was approached by Busi to project manage the show—explained, “The musical will tell Mandoza’s story and journey through theatre with a narrator and playing out scenes from his life on stage. It will pay homage to his most popular songs.”
The project aims to inspire audiences to return to theatres and experience the magic of live performances. Busi noted the ongoing impact of Mandoza’s story, saying, “The Life of Mandoza (BET series) did well and will live for many years on YouTube.”
Following its premiere, The Road to Nkalakatha will tour other provinces, building momentum toward the 25th anniversary of Mandoza’s legendary hit “Nkalakatha” in 2025. Reflecting on this milestone, Busi revealed, “We are planning to have a 25 Years of Nkalakatha Tribute Concert at Orlando Stadium, as that’s where he had his last performance seven days before he passed.”
Through this musical tribute, Mandoza’s spirit and music will continue to resonate, reminding fans of the powerful legacy he left behind.
