Shauwn “Mam’Mkhize” Mkhize’s soccer club, Royal AM, is set to be sold to pay off her mounting debts with the South African Revenue Service (SARS). This follows a difficult legal battle that has left the businesswoman and TV reality star struggling to meet her financial obligations.
Royal AM, which competes in the Betway Premiership and is also known as Thwihli Thwahla, is based in Pietermaritzburg, KZN. It was one of Mam’Mkhize’s key assets attached by SARS as part of its efforts to recover a R40 million debt owed by her.
The trouble began in 2024 when the KZN Local Division of the High Court granted a preservation order and search-and-seizure warrant in a case involving SARS and Mam’Mkhize. As a result, the soccer club was placed under curatorship. Following a recent court ruling, the club is now being sold to settle the outstanding debt.
Due to these financial issues, Royal AM has been unable to participate in soccer matches, leading the Premier Soccer League (PSL) to suspend all its games until further notice.
It’s still uncertain whether the buyer of the club will be from KZN, allowing the team to remain in the province, or if it will be sold to someone from another part of South Africa.
SARS spokesman Siphithi Sibeko confirmed to Daily Sun that the curator is now responsible for all actions regarding the club. “The curator is in charge of selling the club and ensuring that SARS gets its money,” Sibeko explained. He also clarified that SARS itself would not be directly selling the club but that the curator, empowered by the court, would handle the sale.
“The curator is independent and acts according to the mandate given by the court. He will do what is necessary to pay the creditors,” Sibeko said.
