In a twist that has captivated South Africa, popular Limpopo singer Makhadzi, known for her vibrant performances and chart-topping hits, revealed a shocking financial struggle despite receiving substantial support from the Department of Sports, Arts, and Culture (DSAC). According to ZiMoja, over the past 14 months, Makhadzi has been booked for various national events, earning up to R230,000, yet recently disclosed that she had to borrow money from a loan shark to attend the prestigious BET Awards in Los Angeles.

The revelation sparked outrage and prompted a swift response from DSAC. In a statement yesterday, department spokesperson Zimasa Velaphi emphasised their ongoing support for the artist. “DSAC strongly rejects the assertion that it has not supported Makhadzi. Over the past 14 months, Makhadzi has been booked by DSAC to perform in several national engagements, receiving as much as R230,000,” Velaphi stated. The department reiterated its commitment to supporting creatives and promoting their talents both locally and internationally.

The controversy deepened when Makhadzi’s manager, Lucky Tshilimandila, claimed ignorance of her financial plight. “I am not aware of the Mashonisa story, but I heard about it, and we are looking into the matter,” Tshilimandila told ZiMoja. He acknowledged DSAC’s consistent support, especially during critical times such as elections, and expressed optimism about ongoing discussions with the department.

Adding to Makhadzi’s financial woes, the MaGear singer recently confirmed owing the South African Revenue Services (SARS) over R6 million in unpaid taxes and VAT since her breakthrough in the music industry. Sources blamed her previous label, Open Mic, and former manager, Rita Dee, for the oversight. “She has been paying the taxes, as it is her responsibility to do so,” her manager concluded.

Despite these challenges, Makhadzi’s star continues to rise. On July 14, the newly elected Premier of Limpopo, Dr. Phophi Ramathuba, will host a special welcome breakfast in her honour following her return from the BET Awards. “Her success story continues to inspire countless young girls, showing them that they too can achieve international acclaim. The celebration will commence with a welcome breakfast, followed by a vibrant street parade,” the Premier announced.
