South African actress Leleti Khumalo is celebrating a major milestone after being awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws (LLD) (honoris causa) by Rhodes University.

The award recognises her powerful contribution to South African theatre, film and television, as well as her role in telling important stories that reflect the country’s social realities. The moment was clearly emotional for the beloved actress, who shared pictures of herself on stage during the graduation ceremony, dressed in her academic regalia.

A post shared by Dr Leleti Khumalo (@leletikhumalo)

Taking to social media, Khumalo expressed her gratitude and disbelief at the achievement. She wrote, “Dr Leleti Khumalo. Never in a million years did I ever think that would be my title. From a little girl in the dusty streets of Kwamashu to a holder of an honorary Doctor of Laws (LLD) (honoris causa) from Rhodes University in recognition of my profound contribution to South African theatre, film and television, and for my enduring role in using storytelling to illuminate the social realities of our country. Oh I could only dream, and now it’s a reality for little old me. Thank you for seeing me Rhodes University. I still don’t have the words. Somandla, ngyabonga ngaleli thalente owangibusisa ngalo.”

The isiZulu phrase she used translates to, “God, thank you for this talent you have blessed me with,” showing just how deeply personal the moment is for her.

Fans and fellow celebrities quickly flooded her comment section with love and congratulations. Media personality and Apple Music radio host Nandi Madida simply wrote, “Legacy.”

Media personality and radio host Somizi Mhlongo added, “ A well deserved honor.”

TV presenter Kayise Ngqula shared her excitement, commenting, “Ohhh Nkosi Yami… such a blessing Ma. Congratulations.”

TV producer and radio host Relebogile Mabotja also showed her love, writing, “So deserved!!! We love you too much!”

Khumalo’s journey from KwaMashu to receiving one of the highest honours from a respected university is inspiring many.
