Lawrence Maleka is back with a brand-new season of Friends of Amstel: The Challenge, and this time, it’s bigger, bolder, and packed with even more entertainment. The second season of the hit show premieres on 14 June on eTV, and fans are in for a real treat.
Known for his charisma and versatility, Lawrence is one of South Africa’s most in-demand talents. Whether it’s presenting Big Brother Mzansi or taking on acting roles like his latest in Netflix’s The Lobola Man, Lawrence proves time and again that he can do it all.
Recently, the multi-award-winning star travelled to London for the red-carpet premiere of the new Mission: Impossible movie. In an interview with DRUM, he shared a special moment from the trip: “It was a good experience, a wonderful time and atmosphere,” he said.
“Meeting Mr Tom Cruise for the first time, we just kicked off a conversation about what artistry is like. It was a real eye-opening and learning moment for me, something I took in and soaked up. Being in that space and engaging with Tom Cruise was truly special.”
Despite his packed schedule, Lawrence is focused and intentional about his work. “These are two disciplines that I’ve taken the time to hone and harness,” he said of acting and presenting.
“I treat them both with the diligence and discipline that’s required. I’ve got a great team that allows me to focus on one discipline at a time. I like to focus on each project and give it all I have.”
He admits that the entertainment world isn’t always easy. “You’re only going to get as good as the kind of work you pursue,” he told DRUM. “There’s no set formula to this. I’ve been blessed with people thinking of me and wanting to work with me.”
This new season of Friends of Amstel is one he’s especially proud of. “For me, it’s the best show I’ve done in my career,” he said. “We’re very excited—the channel, the brand—we have something special. It’s comedic, light-hearted, and family-oriented.”
Fans can also expect a star-studded lineup, with appearances by DJ Tira, Makhadzi, Khuli Chana, and Nasty C. “This season features even more heat… wild music-and-friendship challenges. It’s bold, unpredictable, and full of heart. We’ve gone bigger on everything this season,” Lawrence added.
Though he’s earned fame and success, he remains grounded. “I’m still my mother’s son, and my father’s son. If I started acting differently now, they’d be very disappointed.”
