South African DJ and Metro FM radio presenter Lamiez Holworthy has opened up about a frightening health scare that left her hospitalised on Women’s Day and undergoing emergency surgery.
The DJ shared a video documenting her difficult journey, from her time in hospital to visits from her loved ones and, eventually, her recovery at home. In the emotional video, Lamiez explained exactly what happened and why she suddenly needed an operation.
She revealed that she was rushed to hospital for an ovarian cystectomy after experiencing unbearable pain caused by an ovarian cyst. Explaining the situation, she said, “We found that we have cysts that have grown. They were two, one raptured and caused extreme pain. My doctor then put me on medication. He said I’d have to decide on whether or not we were going to operate on the bigger one or are we also going to wait for it to also rapture? Fast forward to last week Thursday, the pain got unbearable.”
Despite the seriousness of her condition, Lamiez admitted that she initially did not want to undergo surgery because she had a packed schedule of gigs. She had already committed to performances and pleaded with her doctor not to operate.
However, things quickly took a frightening turn.
After attending one gig, Lamiez was on her way to her second venue when she began feeling nauseous. She vomited and soon found herself screaming in pain. She was rushed to hospital, where doctors decided that an emergency operation was necessary because the cyst had grown too large.
During the operation, doctors discovered additional, smaller cysts. Lamiez was subsequently diagnosed with Endometriosis, adding another unexpected chapter to what had already been an extremely painful experience.
In the caption accompanying the video, Lamiez revealed just how close she felt she came to losing her life. She wrote, “So the cyst that had now grown bigger than my womb burst on Women’s Day- 7 minutes away from the second venue in Brits.”
Reflecting on the ordeal, Lamiez said, “It felt like a movie.”
The DJ also used her experience to encourage other women to take unusual symptoms seriously instead of ignoring them. She wrote, “Ladies, if you experience abnormal period or back pains, please visit your nearest doctor. I nearly lost my life because I ignored mine and chose to put work first.
“1 out of 10 women suffer from Ovarian cysts and endometriosis.
“Living with constant pain isn’t normal nor is there any honour in working yourself to death- I learnt that the hard way.”
Lamiez also took the opportunity to address speculation surrounding her hospitalisation. Social media rumours had suggested that she was in hospital because of complications from a BBL, but she firmly dismissed those claims.
“There is no BBL that is leaking. I had lipo and body sculpting in 2021. I haven’t had any complications to date,” she said.
By sharing her experience, Lamiez has given her followers a glimpse into an intensely personal and unexpected health battle. What started as severe pain eventually led to emergency surgery and an Endometriosis diagnosis, while also teaching her a difficult lesson about putting her health before work.
