Kwaito legend Victor Bogopane, better known as Doc Shebeleza, is currently in critical condition in hospital. The 51-year-old musician’s family confirmed his hospitalisation and is urging South Africans to keep him in their prayers during this difficult time.
“Mzansi, please put our kwaito legend, businessman, and Amaha chairperson in your good blessed prayers, who continues to assist the poorest of the poorest in our beautiful country,” said family spokesperson Shakes Mavundla, according to TshisaLIVE.
Doc Shebeleza, who is now in the ICU at a private hospital in Johannesburg, is set to undergo surgery on Monday. His sudden illness came as a shock to those close to him, as he had been in good health and preparing for an event he was set to host.
“I’m shocked, as he was looking happy and healthy and preparing for the Aboguluvala event in Soweto. But we are hopeful he will make it after the operation,” Mavundla said.
This health scare marks the second time this year that Doc Shebeleza has faced serious health challenges. In June, he was also reported to have been hospitalized.
Doc Shebeleza rose to fame in the 1990s with his debut album S’Kumfete, which was released on cassette in 1996. The album produced several hit songs like Kum’nandi, Ebumnandini, and Ghetsa Ghetsa, helping him establish himself as a prominent figure in the kwaito genre. He also formed the popular group Amaskumfete, known for tracks like Tsipa Tsipa.
Over the years, Doc Shebeleza’s music has deeply resonated with fans, with his lyrics often reflecting his personal experiences, struggles, and triumphs. His influence on the kwaito scene has been immense, inspiring a new generation of artists, including Mandoza and Brown Dash.
In addition to his musical career, Doc Shebeleza is dedicated to giving back through his organisation, Amaha, which works to support fellow artists and uplift communities.
