Doc Shebeleza, a pioneering figure in the kwaito music scene, has passed away at the age of 51 after a prolonged illness, his family confirmed. The artist, whose real name was Victor Bogopane, was hospitalised earlier in June 2024 due to health complications.
Shebeleza rose to fame with his debut album S’Kumfete in 1996, which became a milestone in the kwaito genre. The album featured iconic tracks like Kum’nandi, Ebumnandini, and Ghetsa Ghetsa, and quickly made him a household name. He also founded the group Amaskumfete in the 1990s, known for hits like Tsipa Tsipa.
Beyond his music, Shebeleza’s lyrics deeply connected with fans, telling stories of personal experiences, relationships, and life’s struggles. His influence on the kwaito genre inspired many artists, including Mandoza and Mapaputsi.
In his later years, Shebeleza focused on philanthropy through his organisation Amaha, dedicated to supporting fellow artists. His enduring impact was further celebrated by Cassper Nyovest’s 2014 hit song Doc Shebeleza, which paid tribute to his legacy and further cemented his place in South African music history.
