In a dramatic turn of events, the Johannesburg High Court has intervened to stop Makhosonke Themba ‘Grootman’ Selahle from distributing explicit videos and images featuring himself and his former girlfriend, social media influencer Gcinile Rosetta Twala. This legal move comes in the wake of a scandal that has gripped social media, with the leaked content dominating online conversations since earlier this week, this is all according to ZiMoja.
The scandal erupted after Grootman released the first of several sex tapes, threatening to unveil more. The explicit content quickly went viral, bringing widespread attention and outrage. In response, Twala sought urgent legal relief, represented by Advocate Mathari Manyisa. Also reported by ZiMoja, the court session, held on an urgent basis, concluded with Grootman being ordered to pay Twala’s legal costs.
Presiding Judge Mareena Lani Opperman issued a comprehensive order to prevent further distribution of the compromising material. To ensure compliance, the court authorised the sheriff to serve the interdict not only directly to Grootman via email and WhatsApp but also through his mother, Ms. Mathekethe Selahle, in KwaGuqa Location, Witbank, Mpumalanga. Additionally, the order mandates that the interdict be posted on Grootman’s Instagram feed and Twitter timeline, ensuring he is fully aware of the legal restrictions.
Judge Opperman’s ruling explicitly prohibits Grootman from posting or distributing any photos or videos of Twala, particularly those of a sexual nature. The order also restrains him from harassing or intimidating Twala in any form. The court’s decisive action aims to protect Twala’s privacy and dignity, setting a precedent for handling similar cases of revenge porn.
This case highlights the severe consequences of revenge porn and the legal system’s capacity to protect victims’ rights in the digital age. As the country watches closely, the ruling sends a clear message against the exploitation and harassment of individuals through private, intimate content.
