The highly anticipated Laugh Africa Comedy Festival played host to the recording of ‘The Showmax Roast of Minnie Dlamini,’ and it was a night filled with both royal comedic moments and organizational mishaps. Celebrities flooded the Sandton Convention Centre for the event, which, despite a month of anticipation, fell behind schedule by several hours, kicking off at 10 pm.
According to IOL Entertainment, attendees, including luminaries like Luthando ‘LootLove’ Shosha, Faith Nketsi, Ntando Duma, and Zizo Tshwete, remained committed to the main event, even as it extended well into the night. The phenomenon of roast recordings stretching into the early hours seemed to hold true once again, reminiscent of the ‘Comedy Central Roast of Khanyi Mbau,’ which went on over into the next day.
At the helm of the roast were comedy heavyweights Tumi Morake and Jason Goliath, who found themselves as the targets of jokes, with Morake’s pregnancies and Goliath’s physical appearance becoming fodder for humor. The panelists, including Trevor Gumbi, Shahan Ramkissoon, Celeste Ntuli, Lasizwe Dambuza, Penny Lebyane, Da L.E.S, Siv Ngesi, and Robert Marawa, were not spared, facing roasts about their careers and public blunders.
According to IOL Entertainment some jokes, particularly those aimed at Da L.E.S and his extravagant parties, bordered on cringe-worthy, while Trevor Gumbi’s past struggles with drugs and diabetes, as well as his ex-wife Lucille’s recent wedding, were brought up repeatedly. Gumbi, unsurprisingly, veered off-script during his turn to roast the panelists. Dambuza, whose career blossomed from the digital realm of YouTube, faced his fair share of scrutiny but managed to turn the tables with his own witty retorts. Despite the comedic onslaught, Minnie Dlamini, the star of the night, held her ground and delivered a performance that showcased her ability to handle the heat of the hot seat with finesse.
