Ex-Idols SA contestant Botlhale Phora is embracing a new chapter in his music career, transitioning to gospel music after catching the holy spirit. The 28-year-old musician, who finished third in the 2017 season of Idols SA, is now fully committed to his calling in gospel. He hopes to follow in the footsteps of his hero, the late gospel legend Solly Moholo, who recently passed away.
“One of my biggest regrets is not accepting my calling or following my purpose, which is gospel,” Phora told Sowetan LIVE. “I should’ve ventured into the gospel industry a long time ago, especially when I was given the platform by Idols SA and by now I would’ve been very far.”
Born and raised in a Christian household in Ga-Rankuwa, Phora said his love for music was deeply influenced by Solly Moholo. “My love for music grew when I saw how passionate Solly was about his artistry. It’s quite sad that we lost such an icon,” he shared. “Solly helped shape my musical career. He inspired me to see that one can become big even as a gospel artist.”
Despite his versatility in genres like house, amapiano, afro-pop, and soul, Phora believes he is now answering his true calling. “I’ve always known that gospel is where I should go but I was in denial,” he admitted. “Only now, I’m doing last minute things and starting from scratch. I hope with my drive, I get to occupy the gospel space and become the biggest gospel artist in SA.”
Life after Idols SA has been challenging for Phora, who faced the difficulties of navigating the entertainment industry independently. “We were told that things would change after Idols and that people would forget about us. They basically told us that we’re now on our own and had to sell ourselves in the industry,” he said. As an independent artist, Phora had to take on multiple roles, including managing himself.
However, his hard work has paid off. Phora recently released his first gospel album, a 10-track offering that showcases a variety of gospel styles, from Lundi Tyamara’s influence to ZCC, Hillsong worship, and Apostle music. “It’s all-inclusive to all types of praise because we all praise one God,” Phora said.
Currently touring and performing in churches across South Africa, Phora is dedicated to promoting his new music and fulfilling his purpose in gospel. As he embarks on this spiritual journey, his faith and determination drive him forward, with hopes of becoming a major figure in the gospel music scene.
