Exciting new talent is hitting the big screen as several acclaimed South African actors star in “I Am King”, the debut feature film by director Nonhlanhla Dlamini. The film, which will premiere at the Joburg Film Festival on March 15th, boasts an impressive cast, including multi-award-winning actresses Florence Masebe and Nambitha Ben-Mazwi, alongside seasoned actors Nthati Moshesh and Hlengiwe Lushaba-Madlala.

In addition to Masebe and Ben-Mazwi, the film also features Nimrod Nkosi, Sisanda Henna, and Aaron Moloisi. Together, they bring to life a fresh and compelling story that is set to captivate audiences at the prestigious festival.

“I Am King” is part of a remarkable initiative launched in partnership with the Joburg Film Festival and Showmax. In 2023, Showmax called for submissions from first-time filmmakers in Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria, and South Africa. After reviewing 296 submissions, the festival is set to showcase seven of these films, all of which will have their world premieres during the Joburg Film Festival, running from March 11-16, 2025. These films will later stream on Showmax starting in April.

Tracy Ann van Rooyen, Showmax’s new executive head of content, expressed her excitement about the initiative, saying, “Showmax is committed to opening up the industry. Incredible work is continually underway to support new talent and foster fresh perspectives in storytelling.” She also highlighted how they’ve helped filmmakers like Mandla N and Kelsey Egan achieve great success, including winning SAFTAs. With this new slate of films, Showmax is eager to provide a platform for more emerging voices in South African cinema.

The Joburg Film Festival’s commitment to showcasing fresh and diverse perspectives is a significant step in promoting new talent and offering audiences an opportunity to experience unique, compelling stories. As the festival prepares for its premiere, all eyes will be on “I Am King”, a film that promises to leave a lasting impact on the South African film industry.
