The South African Revenue Service (SARS) inquiry into the R37 million Shandi Trust tax investigation has captured widespread attention, with controversial businesswoman and reality star Shauwn ‘MaMkhize’ Mkhize at the center of the storm. According to ZiMoja, the inquiry, which commenced on Friday, July 11, in Umhlanga, north of Durban, saw Mkhize’s appearance following those of her cousin’s wife, Siphokazi Zuma, and her brother, Melusi Siphesihle Hugh Mkhize, both trustees of the embattled Shandi Trust. The trust currently owes over R37 million to SARS, while MaMkhize herself is facing a personal tax debt of R13 million.
The inquiry has reportedly revealed deep divisions within the Mkhize family. “Shauwn was the main player mentioned there,” a source disclosed. Additionally, other companies and individuals summoned included Shaun Stylist (Shauwn Andile Naki) on behalf of Lungza Management Consultants CC, Nozipho and Mvusi Ngubo, and Thelma Louise Smuts for the Lungazwile Family Trust.
Senzekile Mseleku, MaMkhize’s niece and sole director of DPA Project Managers and Facilitators, was also required to respond to tax concerns regarding her company but was not available at the hearing. The drama continued on Monday, July 15, when Shauwn’s estranged husband, Sbu Mpisane, appeared before the inquiry, while their son Andile failed to show up as scheduled.
Adding to the intrigue, Shauwn’s cousin, Lethukuthula Zuma, appeared at the inquiry on behalf of his company, 22 Aston Investment (Pty) Ltd. It was revealed that many of the addresses used by these companies were incorrect, hindering SARS’s ability to trace taxpayers. Some companies used home addresses, while others listed offices they did not actually occupy.
The Pietermaritzburg High Court had previously appointed Jaco Venter as a curator on May 9, to attach 13 luxury cars under the Shandi Trust held by Melusi Mkhize and his two nieces, Siphokazi Zuma and Senzekile Mseleku.
A source close to the situation mentioned that Sbu Mpisane is confident the truth will emerge after the hearing concludes. “A lot is going to come out of this SARS hearing, and people will be shocked when a final report is released,” the source said, adding that some individuals were revealing crucial information during the inquiry.
When reached for comments, Shaun Stylist abruptly ended the call and ignored subsequent text messages. MaMkhize’s manager and publicist, Nikiwe Nyembe, stated, “I am not currently in communication with Ms Mkhize. Should there be someone that can assist, I will share their contact,” when asked for further details.
