Mzansi Magic’s hit telenovela Genesis is receiving a powerful dose of inspiration this week as legendary gospel icon Dr Rebecca Malope makes a special cameo on the show. Known as the “Queen of Gospel,” Dr Malope brings her warmth, faith, and unmatched presence to the small screen in a moment that fans are already calling divine.
In a special Q&A with Mzansi Magic, she opened up about why she stepped into the world of acting and how this role feels like a natural extension of her life’s journey.
Mzansi Magic (MM): What inspired you to take on this cameo role in Genesis and how does it feel stepping into the world of acting?
Dr Rebecca Malope (RM): “I was inspired by the story because it speaks directly to the industry that I’m already rooted in. It felt familiar. Stepping into acting has been refreshing and exciting; it’s a new way to express myself and connect with people.”
Her appearance on the show is more than just a cameo. For Dr Malope, it is a moment that brings together her faith, her experience, and her love for storytelling.
MM: Was there anything about the character or storyline that resonated with you personally?
RM: “The character’s strength, faith, and resilience really resonated with me. The themes of purpose, calling, and staying grounded reflect so much of my own journey, so stepping into the role felt very natural.”
With a career that has touched millions across South Africa and beyond, Dr Malope says that acting fits beautifully into her mission of storytelling.
MM: You have had an amazingly incredible career in gospel music in Mzansi and parts of Southern Africa. How does appearing on a telenovela align with your personal or professional journey?
RM: “My whole journey has been about storytelling through music, ministry, and testimony. Acting is simply another beautiful way God has allowed me to share stories and reach people. It aligns perfectly with where I am in life: growing, learning, and embracing new spaces while staying true to my foundation.”
Her hope is that viewers walk away from this moment feeling uplifted.
MM: What message do you hope viewers take away from your appearance on the show?
RM: “I hope viewers feel encouraged to embrace new opportunities. Sometimes God opens doors we never expected, and trusting that journey can be a blessing.”
She also believes that joining hands across creative disciplines strengthens the entertainment industry.
MM: How do you see collaborations between music and television shaping the entertainment industry in Mzansi?
RM: “Collaborations between music and television are powerful. Music brings emotion and identity to stories, while television gives artists a wider platform. When they come together, they elevate our industry and help us create uniquely South African and impactful content.”
Dr Rebecca Malope’s appearance on Genesis is already a standout moment for the show, a meeting of faith, storytelling, and artistry.
