In the fervour of South Africa’s election season, political parties are harnessing the influence of celebrities to sway public opinion and inspire voter turnout. Among these stars is the renowned musician Dr Malinga, who has thrown his support behind the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), sharing a heartfelt tale of how the party rescued him from the brink of financial ruin, this is according to ZiMoja.
The “Indlela” singer found himself in dire straits, facing a staggering R500,000 debt in unfiled taxes, a burden that led to the seizure of his cars, furniture, and personal belongings by the South African Revenue Service (SARS). With his home on the verge of repossession, Dr Malinga, his wife, and their children faced the grim reality of homelessness.
Speaking passionately at an EFF Workers Day Community rally in Soshanguve, Dr Malinga recounted his harrowing ordeal, expressing profound gratitude to the party for intervening and preventing the loss of his home. Speaking to ZiMoja Dr Malinga says, “I cried tears. When people see you crying, they tend to judge. I cried because I needed help,” he revealed, shedding light on the vulnerability he experienced during his darkest hour. Undeterred by potential scrutiny, Dr Malinga emphasised his willingness to sacrifice his celebrity status in exchange for securing his family’s future. “I am not buying face. I didn’t go out and rob people, like many people having financial issues. I asked for help,” he declared, urging others in the music industry facing similar struggles to seek assistance without shame.
The EFF’s intervention marked a turning point for Dr Malinga, who now benefits from the guidance of financial advisors and accountants, facilitating his path towards financial stability. However, the party’s support was not the sole beacon of hope for the musician. Following his public revelation, an outpouring of generosity ensued, with fans sending donations to his account and industry colleagues such as Oskido, Black Coffee, and Mkhadzi rallying behind him, offering support through concert bookings and other gestures of solidarity.
As Dr Malinga joins the EFF on the campaign trail, his story serves as a poignant reminder of the intersection between politics and personal struggles, highlighting the role of political parties in addressing societal challenges beyond the realm of policy debates. Through his endorsement and candid recounting of his tribulations, Dr Malinga embodies resilience and advocacy, galvanising both voters and fellow artists to confront adversity with courage and seek assistance when needed.
