The third edition of the Basadi in Music Awards (BIMAs) was a night of celebration and recognition as South Africa’s leading female artists took center stage at the Joburg Theatre on August 10. Among the biggest winners of the evening were DJ Zinhle and rising star Tyla, who each walked away with an impressive three awards, solidifying their status as powerhouses in the music industry.
DJ Zinhle, a trailblazer in the South African music scene, clinched the coveted DJ of the Year award, further affirming her position as a top DJ. She also took home the Collaboration of the Year award, highlighting her knack for creating hit collaborations. The night was made even sweeter as she was honoured with the Trailblazer award, a fitting recognition of her influence and pioneering spirit in the industry.
Tyla, whose meteoric rise has captured global attention, was another star of the night. She received the International Achievement Award, a testament to her growing international appeal. Her chart-topping hit ‘Water’ was a standout at the awards, winning both Song of the Year and Song with the Highest Airplay accolades. These wins underscore Tyla’s impact on the music scene and her ability to create songs that resonate widely.
The evening also saw Lwah Ndlunkulu and Makhadzi making their mark, each taking home two awards. Ndlunkulu was named Artist of the Year, a recognition of her incredible talent and contribution to the industry. Her hit ‘Ngiyeza’ also earned her the CAPASSO Most Streamed Song award, highlighting her popularity among fans. Makhadzi, the queen of dance, secured the Dance Artist of the Year award, and like Tyla, was recognised with the International Achievement Award.
Kamo Mphela, the Amapiano sensation, also shone brightly, winning Amapiano Artist of the Year and Music Video of the Year for her dynamic performances and creative visuals.
Hosted by the charismatic Unathi Nkayi, the BIMAs were not just about the awards but also about celebrating the artistry and diversity of South African music. The night was filled with memorable performances, including powerful sets by Amanda Black, Skye Wanda, and Mmatema. DJ Kmatt brought the house down with a high-energy closing set that left the audience on a high note.
Other notable winners included Shekhinah, who won Pop Artist of the Year for her hit ‘Risk’ featuring Moliy, and Thembi Seete, who was named Best Styled Artist of the Year.
