Renowned DJ Zandile “Zandimaz” Mazithulela has temporarily paused her music career to focus on recovery after undergoing surgery to remove a brain tumour. The “Emathandweni” hitmaker shared her journey with TshisaLIVE, revealing the challenges she faced over the past year.
In early March, Zandimaz underwent a seven-hour surgery following a series of alarming health incidents. While touring the UK in 2022, she experienced a seizure, which was initially dismissed as fatigue. However, a subsequent seizure in Zambia led to a crucial discovery. “We thought it was just fatigue, and that’s when I went to see my doctor and they discovered I have a tumour,” she said.
The DJ’s condition deteriorated, causing severe anxiety and affecting her nervous system. “For a year I took a break, then things got worse. I was going through different types of emotions. I couldn’t walk properly,” she recounted. Despite the risk of a fatal outcome, Zandimaz opted for surgery. “I was praying for it to be successful. It was a seven-hour surgery, I stayed in the ICU for five days then went home. I’m glad I’m on the road to recovery.”
Now recuperating at home, Zandimaz reflects on how the tumour impacted her music career, causing depression and diminishing her confidence. “I couldn’t perform as I can’t stand for long and couldn’t wear heels. My confidence went down, it frustrated me. A lot of people were not aware I was going through hectic stuff.”
Throughout this ordeal, Zandimaz’s husband has been a steadfast pillar of support, helping her navigate this challenging period. At 32, Zandimaz is determined to regain her strength and return to the stage, but for now, her focus remains on healing and recovery.
