While DJ Speedsta, born Lesego Nkaitseng, is widely recognised for his influence on the South African music scene, few know about his deep-rooted passion for skateboarding—a passion that nearly became his career. Now, DJ Speedsta is merging his love for music and skateboarding with the launch of his own skateboarding company, Brother Skateboards.
Taking to Instagram, he shared the story behind this exciting new venture. “All I ever wanted to do as a kid was skate! Skate every day in the hopes of becoming a pro one day,” he wrote, reflecting on his childhood dreams. Although his path eventually led him to music, his love for skateboarding never faded.
In 2017, after a decade-long break, DJ Speedsta picked up his skateboard again and decided to contribute to South Africa’s skateboarding culture. His journey began with the opening of “The Skatehub” in 2019, followed by the establishment of the first Black-owned skatepark in South Africa in 2020. These milestones fueled his desire to take his passion even further.
Despite facing challenges, including the theft of 230 skateboards by a supplier in 2022, DJ Speedsta remained undeterred. “2023 was a difficult one for us. But we kept going!!” he shared. His perseverance paid off, and in 2024, DJ Speedsta proudly announced the official launch of Brother Skateboards.
“Welcome to Brother Skateboards,” DJ Speedsta declared, promising that his brand is “about to take over the world.” With Brother Skateboards, DJ Speedsta aims to inspire the next generation of South African skaters and contribute to the growth of the local skateboarding scene, proving that it’s never too late to follow your passion.
