DJ, radio and TV host DJ Sbu is celebrating his 49th birthday today, with fans and celebrities flooding social media with heartfelt wishes.
The media personality marked the occasion with a simple Instagram post showing a plate with cake and the words “Happy Birthday DJ Sbu” written in chocolate. The post quickly drew warm reactions from followers and fellow celebrities.
Fitness enthusiast Sbahle Mpisane wrote, “Wishing you many more wonderful years ahead. Happy birthday.”
Media personality and dancer Robot Boii added, “Happy Birthday Sbuda! May God Continue Blessing you with many more. Danko Grootman.”
Ahead of his birthday, DJ Sbu also reflected on his entrepreneurial journey by sharing a 2014 video showing the early days of his energy drink brand, Mofaya.
In the emotional post, he explained that Mofaya “was born in the streets of Johannesburg in 2014 with nothing but vision, faith, courage, hustle and prayer.”
He said the business started with “No fancy offices. No investors. No endorsements. Just a dream bigger than our circumstances and the willingness to work when nobody believed in us.”
DJ Sbu recalled how difficult the journey was at a time when entrepreneurship was not widely celebrated. Despite criticism and doubt, he and his team kept pushing forward.
He described the company’s humble beginnings as “One can. One fridge. One client. One street. One kasi. One taxi rank. One customer at a time.”
Today, Mofaya is stocked in major retailers including Clicks, Pick n Pay, Spar and Boxer. DJ Sbu thanked the stores for supporting the brand over the years.
He also spoke about the sacrifices behind the success, saying the journey involved “years of rejection, sacrifice, sleepless nights, losses, self doubt and discipline.”
According to DJ Sbu, Mofaya has grown into more than just an energy drink. He believes it represents black excellence, self-belief and proof that young black entrepreneurs can build successful legacy brands from humble beginnings.
He ended his message by encouraging young entrepreneurs to start with whatever they have and never feel ashamed of humble beginnings. “Success takes time. Legacy takes sacrifice. Generational wealth takes discipline,” he wrote.
