Set against the vibrant communities of Soshanguve and Mabopane, DiChipi by JiK’iZinto is a refreshing new series that brings a modern, community-centered narrative to South African screens. The show follows three unlikely friends who, after a chaotic night, find themselves on a journey to save their local community centre. Along the way, they face the pressures of family life, academic responsibilities, and relationship dynamics, all while discovering their own identities through music, comedy, and MMA fighting.
More than just entertainment, DiChipi tackles important themes such as mental health, economic independence, and sexual health. The series sheds light on the power of friendship and the resilience of young people striving to rewrite their futures.
According to DRUM Magazine, reflecting on the show’s inspiration, Lebo Leitch, Creative Lead at JiK’iZinto, explains, “Creating a show that resonates with the energy and community-centered approach of Soul Buddyz felt necessary because the challenges facing young people have evolved, yet the need for support, representation, and relatable storytelling remains the same.”
Lebo highlights that DiChipi doesn’t shy away from difficult topics. “What sets DiChipi apart is its approach to modern issues like mental health, sexual and reproductive health, and economic inclusion, framed within the context of a more digital and socially conscious world,” she shares. The show collaborates with mental health professionals and youth counsellors to ensure these sensitive topics are portrayed realistically and helpfully.
DiChipi goes beyond storytelling by providing young viewers with the tools to navigate real-life challenges. Through partnerships with support organizations, the show connects its audience with valuable resources, aiming to inspire action, whether it be through mentorship or therapy.
Ultimately, Lebo hopes that DiChipi will become more than just a TV show. “Our hope is for DiChipi by JiK’iZinto to become more than just a show—it should serve as a movement that inspires and equips young people to take charge of their lives and future,” she explains.
