“Haven’t spoken to my children in almost two weeks. My biggest regret is choosing wrong and having my children live with the consequences of my actions,” Denise wrote.
Her words reflect deep pain and guilt, as she continues to deal with the impact of losing custody. Many people responded with messages of comfort, sending love and strength her way.
Denise has been in a long legal battle to keep her daughters, aged 19 months and 5 years, in South Africa. In March, the non-profit organisation Women For Change (WFC) spoke out in support of her. They said Denise has been “relentlessly fighting” to keep her children in South Africa—the only home they truly know.
The Johannesburg High Court had ruled in favour of Denise’s estranged husband, allowing him to take the children back to Germany. WFC strongly disagreed with the court’s decision, saying it focused too much on the father’s rights and ignored the emotional harm caused by separating the children from their mother.
In a statement on X, WFC said, “The court filed documents and claimed that the girls would be distressed without their father but failed to acknowledge the devastating trauma it would have on the children to tear them away from their mother and their home.”
Denise’s struggle began after she and her husband moved to Germany in 2022. After their second daughter was born, the family came back to South Africa. As their relationship broke down, Denise decided to stay in Cape Town, where she felt supported by loved ones. Although her husband first agreed to this, he later accused her of keeping the children unlawfully and took legal action under the Hague Convention.
In April, Denise posted an emotional letter to her daughters on Instagram, expressing her pain over not seeing them.
“I love you Leah and Mila. Haven’t seen or spoken to you since last Saturday. My body shows I bared my children, but no children in sight. God only knows why this is happening. The truth will always find its way. Love mama. Happy Easter,” she wrote.
Women For Change summed up the situation by saying, “This ruling is yet another example of the system failing mothers.”
