Cotton Fest, one of South Africa’s most loved youth culture and music festivals, has officially come to an end. After running successfully for seven years, the organisers confirmed that the festival will no longer continue. The announcement was made on Cotton Fest’s Instagram page, leaving many fans emotional and reflecting on the impact the festival has had since its launch in 2019.
In their heartfelt message, the Cotton Fest team wrote, “CottonFest was never just a Festival. It was a family, a purpose, and a heartbeat shared among Us. Thank you for carrying that heartbeat with us so fiercely and for walking this journey with us. Though this era ends, the legacy and love behind it will stand timeless because of all of YOU, Cotton Eaters.”
The organisers went on to express deep gratitude to everyone who supported the movement over the years. They added, “Since 2019 YOU have all been instrumental in the success of the Festival but more so, in keeping the movement and Riky’s legacy alive. After months of deliberation, it is with a very heavy heart that we share the news that it is the end of an era for the Festival.”
Cotton Fest was founded by the late rapper and cultural icon Riky Rick, and after his passing, the event became a symbol of continuing his vision and celebrating his legacy. Its blend of music, fashion, art, and youth expression made it a standout event in South Africa’s entertainment scene, drawing thousands of young creatives every year.
However, the team revealed that internal challenges made it impossible to continue the festival in the way its founder intended. They stated, “Sadly differences among the current shareholders have led to disputes between them, that make it increasingly challenging to continue the festival in a manner that upholds the standards and vision set out by its sole founder, Riky Rick.”
The Cotton Fest team also shared a final note of appreciation, saying, “The CottonFest team would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you, for being part of the movement and for helping to build our incredible community. Thank you for walking this journey with us. With Love, Bianca and The CottonFest Team.”
Bianca Naidoo, Cotton Fest owner and organiser, also shared her thoughts on the festival’s closure. She said, “CottonFest has always been rooted in creativity, community and cultural celebration focused on creating a platform for the youth to shine. While we remain extremely proud of what the festival has achieved and are deeply grateful for the support it has received from our fans, partners and the artists over the years, the differences in festival’s vision and purpose among the two parties has made it clear to our family and the team, that concluding this chapter is the most realistic path forward.”
Though Cotton Fest has come to an end, its influence on youth culture, fashion, music, and local creative communities will continue to live on. Many fans believe the movement Riky Rick started will remain a strong part of South Africa’s cultural history.
