South African music fans are in for a treat as iconic kwaito group Boom Shaka gears up for a highly anticipated comeback, three decades after their groundbreaking debut. Known for their infectious beats and energetic performances, Boom Shaka left an indelible mark on the music industry, playing a pivotal role in popularising kwaito music.

ZiMoja revealed that the popular group is back in the studio, crafting their long-awaited album. This resurgence promises to be a momentous occasion for the industry and their devoted fanbase. Interestingly, the new album won’t be released under their long-time label Kalawa Jazzme, which has ceased regular music production. “They are working independently as Kalawa is not making music anymore, unless it is special projects,” a source disclosed. While the group confirmed their return, they chose to keep details under wraps, teasing, “Well, we guess the secret is out there.”

However, the road to their comeback has not been without challenges. ZiMoja has learned that founding member Theo Nhlengethwa was hospitalised after injuring his arm during a gym training session. This injury led to weeks in the hospital and delayed the group’s 30th-anniversary tour. “He is still in pain, especially when it gets cold. Doctors have advised him not to overwork his right arm,” the source revealed. The injury forced the trio to cancel appearances and interviews to allow Theo time to heal. “He is much better now; at least he can move around, although he still needs help with things like getting dressed. Fortunately, his wife has been there to support him,” the source added.

Despite the setbacks, Boom Shaka is excited about their new music, although they remain tight-lipped about the specifics. The anticipation builds as fans eagerly await what promises to be a significant milestone in the group’s illustrious career.
