Bongani Luvalo is proving that he is more than just a reality TV favourite. After capturing the hearts of viewers across the country, he is now stepping into the world of acting. The former Married at First Sight: Mzansi star has officially joined the cast of Generations: The Legacy, marking an exciting new chapter in his career.
Bongani, 37, became a household name in 2025 when he appeared on Married at First Sight: Mzansi and was dubbed “the country’s husband.” Now, he has secured his first acting gig on the SABC1 soapie, where he will play the role of Pastor Lawrence.
Speaking to Daily Sun, Bongani admitted that acting was never something he planned for himself. Although he is already an author and radio presenter, he never imagined being in front of the camera as an actor.
“I think it was more of having to allow myself to go into it. I’ve never planned to go into acting. I’ve always been kind of storytelling, literature, writing but never imagined myself as in front of the camera to be an actor. I love storytelling. When the idea was introduced to me, it was more of, why not try it out? Why not test it out,” he said.
He explained that the opportunity came through his manager.
“My manager called and said this is a conversation that is happening. So, between my manager and the Generations: The Legacy production, I think, how the conversation started, I don’t know. But their conversation started and he asked, ‘do you think you would be able to join Generations?’ I was like, where does this come from? I’m an author, not an actor. But I decided to try it out.”
In the soapie, Pastor Lawrence is described as a charismatic priest who holds power and influence. However, his character also has flaws.
“He loves power, has power, but is also having his own faults as a human being. He’s also cheated on his wife and that has broken down the church. Now, he’s trying to make amends with his wife and bring the church together.
“He knows his space. He knows he has influence and knows how to use that influence to get his things around. And now he’s coming into Ezweni to ask them to try and manage his brand and restore in his church and the confidence in his church,” said Bongani.
Although many viewers loved him for who he was on Married at First Sight: Mzansi, Bongani believes this experience will be different because it is not about his real life.
“I think this one might be different from Married at First Sight because there, people thought they were part and parcel of my personal life,” he said.
“People were so invested in my personal life and my own marriage, so here they have an opportunity of having to fall in love with the craft that is this man, Pastor Lawrence.”
