Bomb Productions has issued a strong statement following reports of independent casting and extras agencies misleading and exploiting individuals by using the company’s name to lure them into joining their agencies under false pretences.
The production company highlighted the unsanctioned activities of casting agents regarding background actors for “Shaka Ilembe.” Bomb Productions is currently conducting a legal and fact-finding investigation but has shared the following findings and actions.
Bomb Productions received reports of a makeshift campsite where many people claimed they were working for “Shaka Ilembe.” An investigation revealed that these individuals were invited by Becky Casting with the promise of work on the show. Bomb had never authorised this, and the investigation found that people had paid Becky Casting for accommodation, only to end up in unsafe and undignified conditions. Bomb quickly demanded Becky Casting address the situation and disband the campsite, also notifying local authorities.
Becky Casting apologised for any misrepresentation and assured Bomb that they would rectify the situation. Bomb was informed that the campsite was closed and proper accommodation was provided for the people involved. Two weeks later, Bomb received reports of another large group housed in a church, waiting for work on “Shaka Ilembe.” The inquiry revealed it was again Becky Casting, whose clients refused to leave until they received refunds and job placements. Bomb held Becky Casting accountable, insisting they repay their clients for accommodation fees and ensure their safe return home. Becky Casting agreed to these terms.
Bomb has been alerted to three other agents housing people in improper conditions. Bomb intervened swiftly in each case, discouraging these practices and requiring all background casting agents to sign a code of conduct. Bomb clarified that they never request background cast agencies to invite people from outside Johannesburg or to provide accommodation. For out-of-town cast, Bomb handles all logistical details, including transport, accommodation, and per diems.
Bomb is assisting affected individuals from Becky Casting and exploring legal options. The matter has been reported to the IPO. Bomb views this as an opportunity to advocate for stronger protections for background actors and production companies against unscrupulous casting agents. The company, with a 20-year professional track record, is committed to fair employment practices and timely payments.
The exploitation by these rogue agents not only tarnishes the reputation of Bomb Productions but also undermines the significant employment opportunities created by “Shaka Ilembe.” In Season 1 alone, over 8,000 people were employed, with numbers expected to rise in Season 2. Bomb Productions is determined to safeguard the integrity of the industry and ensure fair treatment for all involved.
