Media mogul Basetsana Kumalo, better known as Bassie, is stepping into the world of filmmaking as an executive producer for the highly anticipated 2025 South African crime thriller City of Gold.
Alongside her, the film is produced by a talented group of industry veterans, including Clifford Elk, Jeremy Nathan, Phil Lyon, Jean-François Dugal, and Sheila Afari. This marks a bold new chapter for Kumalo, who has long been a dominant figure in South Africa’s media landscape.
In addition to Kumalo, City of Gold features a star-studded cast, with 33-year-old actor Bonko Khoza, known for his role in The Wife, taking on both an executive producer role and starring as the lead. The film also features acclaimed actors such as Thabo Malema, Given Stuurman, Otto Nobela, and Moss Makwati, who is trying his hand at acting for the first time after being a prominent Moja Love presenter.
Directed by Fabien Martorell, City of Gold is expected to be a gripping thriller when it hits screens later this year. Fans of South African cinema can look forward to a powerful story backed by a team of industry leaders, blending high-stakes crime drama with world-class production.
