Showmax is bringing fans another unforgettable reality TV experience with The Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip: Africa, premiering on Friday, 28 November. This season promises glitz, glamour, and drama as some of Africa’s most iconic Housewives come together for the ultimate getaway — this time set against the lively and colourful backdrop of Brazil.
One of the familiar faces joining the cast is Annie Mthembu, one of the original stars from The Real Housewives of Durban (RHOD), the longest-running Housewives franchise in Africa. In a recent chat with Showmax, Annie opened up about her much-anticipated return to reality TV, what fans can expect from the show, and how she’s stepping into this new chapter of her life.
After being away from the spotlight for two years, Annie said the timing couldn’t have been better. “After two years away from the cameras, I finally felt like me again; refreshed, recharged, and ready to have fun with it,” she shared. “I took that break to protect my peace and do some serious self-work. Now I’m coming back from a place of strength, not survival.”
Returning to the franchise as one of the OGs, Annie admitted she was both excited and a little nervous. “It’s not every day you get a house full of iconic women from all over the continent! My mindset was simple: go in open-hearted, have fun, and represent Durban with grace and a little spice,” she said. “I wasn’t looking for drama, but I also wasn’t going to dim my light or bite my tongue.”
To prepare mentally for the spotlight again, Annie focused on inner peace and balance. “If your mind and heart aren’t in sync, the spotlight can be heavy,” she explained. “I pray, I journal, I affirm myself daily and I’ve built a routine that keeps me grounded no matter what chaos is around me. So yes, I’m back in the spotlight… but this time, the light is mine.”
Annie also shared that she formed meaningful connections during the trip. “I met some incredible women who were not only relatable but genuinely fun to be around. There was such a beautiful energy of sisterhood and laughter,” she said. “I found peace and connection in spaces I didn’t expect.”
When asked who surprised her most, she mentioned Mariam and Dr C, describing them as “vibrant, fun-loving women, full of personality and heart,” adding that “they’re bold, smart, and know how to hold their own.”
Of course, no Housewives trip would be complete without drama. Annie admitted there were moments she wished hadn’t been caught on camera. “There’s a moment where I lost myself a little because some personal triggers came up,” she revealed. “But I also believe those moments are part of being real.”
As for who brought the most drama, Annie laughed and said, “This one’s a definite tie between Mariam and Christell, for sureeeee! Those two brought the spice, the sass, and the moments that had everyone talking.”
Fans can expect to see a more evolved side of Annie this season. “People should watch the show because now they will see a whole new Annie,” she said. “I’m lighter, happier, and way more self-aware, but still spicy enough to keep things interesting!”
The Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip: Africa is set to deliver laughter, emotion, and unforgettable moments. Annie promises viewers, “Expect laughter, heart, and a little bit of heat, because I came to enjoy this trip, not just survive it.”
