Angel Zuma, widely celebrated for her portrayal of the conniving Nomkhosi on Umkhokha: The Curse, has once again wowed South Africans with her remarkable talent. The actress first gained recognition for her role as Zethu on Uzalo, but it was her performance as Nomkhosi, the wife of Khulekani Mthembu, that truly solidified her status in the entertainment industry.
Now, Zuma is set to take on an even more prestigious role. According to ZiMoja, sources close to the actress reveal that she has been offered a lucrative position in the internationally acclaimed musical drama, The Lion King. According to one source, Angel did not hesitate to accept the opportunity to join the award-winning production, which tours across North America and worldwide. “My friend has always wanted to go and work abroad. You don’t miss an opportunity of working in a production like The Lion King. It is every actor’s dream,” said the source.
Another insider close to Zuma mentioned that she informed her producers at Umkhokha about her decision to quit shortly after signing the contract with the international production. The source added that the show’s producers were reluctant to let her go, especially given her popularity with fans. “They wanted to see more of her on the show because she performs it with aplomb,” said the source.
With her departure, producers now face the challenge of either finding a replacement or writing her character out of the story. “ I am not sure how they are going to play out this one because she did not leave under a cloud. She might come back and shoot her exit scenes properly,” shared the insider.
The source also noted that Angel is leaving the telenovela at a time when her character was undergoing significant development, making it difficult to replace her. “This is because her role is prominent. The writers and producers will have to meet and discuss a way forward. However, I know they are looking at holding auditions next week to either try and replace her or find new characters,” the source added.
Portia Hlongwane, publicist for Mzansi Magic, confirmed the news, stating, “Angel has gotten an amazing opportunity to be part of The Lion King in Canada (Toronto). She is excited for the opportunity… viewers can continue to see her on screen.”
